Day 3: No Grand Cayman For Us

At Sea — Caribbean Sea
Temps: 79F (26C) @ UTC 5:00P (ship’s time Noon)

For my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go.
I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move.
~ Robert Louis Stevenson ~

We woke up at 6:30a to a bit of motion of the ocean.  It was a dull, gray morning that greeted us.  The NavChannel listed the wind speed as a “fresh breeze” at about 31 knots.  The sea condition was described as large wavelets … a leftover from yesterday, I imagine … the waves definitely looked bigger.

“We won’t be tendering in these conditions,” I said to Mui as we headed up to the Terrace Café for breakfast.  No one else was about when we sat down to a quiet meal at a two-top in a secluded corner out of the wind … lovely … just the way we like it.

It was shortly after 9:00a when Captain B came on the P/A system with important information about our planned day in George Town, Grand Cayman.  “Due to the weather, the port is closed,” he said.  Well now, tell me something I didn’t already know from having observed the conditions for myself.  He continued … “After consulting with the head office in Miami, we have made the decision to continue to Cartagena, our next port on the 10th.”  Alrighty.

Leaving Grand Cayman

Insignia’s wake as we bypass Grand Cayman due to the weather.

What this means is that we are getting a bonus day at sea.  Although we were looking forward to GC, I have to admit this day at sea is a welcome one.  We get to relax and rejuvenate before we begin the series of ports of call for this segment in earnest.

As I write this, the sky is brightening.  I can see patches of blue peeking through the puffy white clouds.  And there is no rain.  I’m going to post this and make myself comfy on the veranda to do a bit of that rejuvenating I mentioned above.

  4. Lovely to have extra sea days with so much coming up. It took me a bit of cruising to discover the beauty of quiet sea days. I am looking forward to photos of the ship and your cabin, all that good stuff. Have fun.

  6. Hi, we’re about to book the 2020 RTW and loving your blog. Is the included internet sufficient for your blog or did you have to upgrade to the streaming package. Thanks.

    1. There was no such thing as upgrading to the streaming package when we did the RTW in 2017. I found the internet sufficient most of the time ... but fell way behind because of the port-intensive itinerary and ended up finishing the blog after I got home. This will become apparent as you continue reading.

We're booked on the 2022 RTW and this time I am going to try FindPenguins ... simpler format and able to write the blog on the iPad as there is an online version as well as an App.
